When Insecurity Offends God: Why He Chose You | Exodus 4:13-14

We live in a culture that glamorizes insecurity just as much as it glorifies self-reliance. But what if I told you that lingering in insecurity—especially when God has already called and equipped you—can provoke His anger?

In Exodus 4:13-14, we find Moses wrestling with doubt and insecurity. God had clearly spoken to him, given him signs, and laid out the assignment. Yet Moses replies:

“Oh my Lord, please send someone else.”
Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses… (Exodus 4:13-14, ESV)

That one line shook me: God’s anger was kindled.

Why? Because Moses didn’t just express nervousness—he resisted God's choice. He rejected the calling. He told the Creator of his mouth that he wasn’t fit to speak. Over and over again, Moses pointed to his weakness, but God responded not with sympathy—but with authority and presence.

God told Moses:

“Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11, ESV)

Insecurity can feel like humility, but when it questions God’s sovereignty and rejects His decisions—it becomes unbelief.

The Root of Moses’ Resistance

Moses wasn’t just afraid. He didn’t believe God could use him. That unbelief is what stirred God’s anger. And I wonder how many of us are guilty of the same thing:

  • “I’m not qualified.”

  • “I don’t have the right background.”

  • “I don’t have a big platform.”

  • “I’ve made too many mistakes.”

We offer up our resumes of reasons, but God isn’t impressed with our self-doubt. He’s not calling us because we’re flawless—He’s calling us because He’s with us.

God’s Response to Insecurity

Every time Moses doubted, God responded with authority (“I Am who I Am”) and presence (He never sent Moses alone). These two are still His answers today:

  • Authority: You are not going in your name. You are going in His.

  • Presence: You’re not going alone. He’s going with you.

That’s all you need.

If God wanted to send someone else, He would have. But He didn’t. He chose you. So stop disqualifying yourself from something heaven already assigned you to do.

God doesn’t make mistakes. He doesn’t miscalculate. And He doesn’t call the wrong people.

It’s Time to Move

You don’t need to wait for more confirmation. You don’t need to shrink back because of who you think you are. If God is speaking to you—it’s because He intends to send you.

So go.

Go with His authority.
Go with His presence.
Go with boldness, because the One who made you is the One sending you.

And that’s more than enough.
