Calm Down & He Will Answer You

Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest spiritual victories in his ministry—calling down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18).

Yet, soon after, fear and despair consumed him, and he fled into the wilderness, convinced he was utterly alone. It was in this moment of exhaustion, fear, and emotional turmoil that God met him—not in a big loud demonstration of a miracle that we’ve been taught to look for, but in a still, small voice.

“And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12, ESV)

God did not speak to Elijah through the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. These grand displays of power were not where His voice was found.

Instead, His voice came in a low whisper—a quiet, steady word in the stillness. It was only after Elijah had calmed down that God addressed his concerns, reassuring him that he was not alone and giving him direction for the days ahead.

This passage reminds us that God does not lead us through emotional highs or frantic desperation, but through soundness of mind.

He does not manipulate our emotions with overwhelming displays but leads us with clarity and peace.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV)

If we constantly seek God in emotional experiences or dramatic signs, we may miss His voice. His voice is often found in quiet moments of reflection, in His Word, and in the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit.

Let us not mistake noise for His presence, nor excitement for His voice. Instead, may we learn to quiet our hearts and listen for His whisper.

We just need to calm down.

    Then state our concern.

    And then let Him speak.

God’s word is so rich 🔥
